More than 250 ski mountaineering professionals from 19 countries meet at the Alta Ribagorça resort in the most important event in the annual calendar of this sport worldwide.

The opening ceremony highlighted the cultural and natural heritage of the Vall de Boí, a nationally consolidated tourist destination, now the epicenter of international interest.

The competition debuts on Wednesday with the sprint test, one of the most dynamic and spectacular.

A total of 19 countries (Andorra, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Slovakia, Slovenia, United States, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Russia, Switzerland and Sweden) meet starting this Tuesday, at the Boí Taüll ski resort in Ribagorça, in a new edition of the ISMF European Championships Skimo Boí Taüll 2022.

More than 250 people make up the total delegations, including athletes and staff that are made up of coaches, physiotherapists, doctors, skimans... The competition program is made up of four competitions: (Sprint, on February 9; Vertical, on February 10; Individual, on February 12 and the Relays, on February 13).

The Boí Taüll resort has prepared its facilities to receive the European ski mountaineering competition with the experience of previous seasons where the resort organized everything from the specialty Spanish Cups to the Spanish Championships.

This competition, which is the most important ski mountaineering competition of 2022, is organized by Boí Taüll and with the support of FEDME and FEEC and it will take place from February 8 to 13.

Sprint, the debut of the competition

Pla de les Vaques will host the most spectacular event on the programme: the sprint. As its name indicates, it is a very fast race. The athlete must complete the entire route in the shortest possible time (approximately three minutes). The first round is an individual classification starting every twenty seconds. Athletes pass rounds until the final.

The organization has designed a route that will have good visibility for all the attending public.

This test will be contested by the categories: senior male, senior female, U23 male, U23 female, U20 male, U20 female, U18 male and U18 female.

In any international event, the work carried out by volunteers is very important. In this sense, the ISMF European Championships - Skimo Boí Taüll 2022 will have a total of 110 volunteers who will support the LOC.

Inauguration ISMF European Championships Skimo Boí Taüll 2022

The exterior of the Romanesque Church of Sant Climent de Taüll has been the scene of the institutional opening ceremony of the ISMF European Championships Skimo Boí Taüll 2022 with the interventions of Antoni Sanmartí, director of FGC Turisme; Jordi Merino, president of FEEC; Sonia Bruguera, mayor of Boí; Alberto Ayora, president of the FEDME and Pierre Dupont, sports vice president of the ISMF. The inauguration wanted to bring the territory closer to all the attendees with the projection of a video of the Vall de Boí with images of the different activities that are carried out both in summer and in winter, highlighting the prominence of the outstanding assets of cultural heritage and natural environment found in the Alta Ribagorça valley. The standard-bearers have been accompanied by fallaires, protagonists of one of the most deeply rooted cultural traditions in the Vall de Boí. The inauguration has ended with fireworks that have closed the ceremony.

In the speeches, Antoni Sanmartí, director of FGC Turisme, stated that “holding the European Ski Mountaineering Championships in Boí Taüll is a historic event for the Vall de Boí and the Catalan Pyrenees. One of the strategic axes in the management of the Ferrocarrils mountain stations is the promotion of sports and healthy living. Today we are here doing precisely this, in collaboration with the other actors who make this adventure possible”. Sanmartí added that "by holding these championships in Alta Ribagorça, Ferrocarrils evidences the actions it carries out throughout the year for territorial development".
